OSHAWA — The Durham Roadrunners announced today that Joe Cathcart has been named head coach for the 2026-27 season.
Cathcart, an established coach with previous experience in the Greater Metro Hockey League, brings a proven track record across Junior A, collegiate and elite development hockey.
"It's about building a culture, competitiveness and strong relationships with players," said Cathcart, a native of Vancouver, B.C. "I'm a high-energy, detail-oriented coach and my focus is on helping athletes maximize their potential."
The veteran bench boss has previously served in coaching roles with the New Tecumseth Civics, Slave Lake Ice Dogs, Bancroft Rockhounds and most recently Alberta’s Portage College Voyageurs (ACAC).
“My philosophy is simple: Commitment, accountability and consistency produce results on and off the ice,” continued Cathcart. “I understand the importance of discipline, work ethic and team culture in building a successful program — and look forward to the opportunity in Durham.”
Cathcart begins the role with immediate effect; he will be running the Summer Skate program at Canlan Oshawa on Saturdays (7:30 to 8:30 p.m.).
Preparations are well underway for the 2026-27 campaign, as the Roadrunners have already announced two returning players — forward Pavel Tuniy and goaltender Oliver Levy — and drafted the rights to 13 players during Wednesday’s GMHL Draft.
